Onset cannot be reliably prevented, but burns, injury-triggered patches, delay and distress all can be.
Vitiligo cannot be prevented in the usual sense - there is no vaccine, diet or habit proven to stop an autoimmune tendency from declaring itself. But there is much that reduces triggers, limits spread and catches it early.
Protect skin from injury. New patches appear at injured sites (cuts, burns, friction, tattoos). Avoiding sunburn, harsh chemicals, tight friction and unnecessary skin trauma reduces these triggers. Daily sunscreen on vulnerable areas is part of this.
Do not tan aggressively. Tanning increases contrast and sunburn risk without helping patches; deliberate tanning of white patches (they cannot tan - they burn) only harms.
Catch it early. A new white patch deserves a dermatology visit within weeks, not years: early disease repigments far better. If a family member has vitiligo or autoimmune thyroid disease, keep a lower threshold for getting any patch checked.
Manage associated conditions. If thyroid disease or another autoimmune condition is found, treating it properly is part of overall care (though it does not itself reverse vitiligo).
Stress and general health. Emotional stress is a reported flare trigger for some; regular sleep, exercise and stress management are sensible, though not proven preventives.
For those who already have vitiligo, 'prevention' means: preventing spread (early anti-inflammatory treatment during active phases), preventing burns (sun protection), preventing Koebner patches (skin gentleness), and preventing the secondary harms - social withdrawal and distress - through early support and honest counselling.
What does not prevent it: avoiding milk-fish combinations, sour foods or any dietary rule; special soaps; or preventive medicines for healthy family members.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical advice on incompatible foods and routine aims at prevention within an interpretive framework of limited evidence; the practical measures above carry the modern weight. Adjunct only.
Remember: you cannot reliably prevent onset, but you can prevent burns, injury-triggered patches, delay and distress. Early dermatology care for any new patch is the single highest-value step.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune loss of pigment cells - not contagious, not infection, and not caused by milk, fish or food combinations.
Vitiligo moves from onset through active spread to stability - early phases repigment best, old white-haired patches least.
Ayurvedic care may accompany vitiligo treatment, but bakuchi is a real photosensitizer - burns and new patches are documented harms.
Stop activity, repigment patiently with phototherapy, graft stable patches, protect from sun - control, not a promised cure.
Well-defined milky-white patches with normal sensation, often on the face and hands - itching, scaling or numbness mean a different diagnosis.
Yoga and exercise serve stress, mood and fitness in vitiligo - protect patches from sun and friction, and let medicine do the treating.
