Well-defined milky-white patches with normal sensation, often on the face and hands - itching, scaling or numbness mean a different diagnosis.
Vitiligo announces itself simply: white patches on the skin. Recognizing its typical pattern helps distinguish it from other causes of light patches, which need different treatment.
The hallmark sign. Well-defined, milky-white patches with normal sensation - they do not itch, hurt, scale or feel different from surrounding skin. Common starting sites are the face (around eyes and mouth), hands and fingers, feet, elbows, knees, and body folds. Patches can appear at sites of skin injury.
Other pigment signs. Hair within a patch may turn white (leukotrichia); premature greying of scalp hair can accompany it. Patches may be symmetrical on both sides of the body (the common form) or confined to one band or area on one side (segmental).
Course. Unpredictable: patches may stay stable for years, spread slowly, or occasionally spread rapidly over months. Sun-exposed areas often worsen because surrounding skin tans and increases contrast. The white patches themselves sunburn easily - they have no protective pigment.
What vitiligo does NOT cause: no itching, pain, scaling, or internal illness by itself. Physical health is otherwise normal; the burden is visible and psychological.
Look-alikes that are NOT vitiligo: pityriasis alba (faint, slightly scaly patches on children's cheeks - harmless and temporary), tinea versicolor (fine scaly patches from a yeast), leprosy patches (which lose sensation - any numb light patch needs medical review), post-inflammatory lightening after eczema or injury, and chemical leukoderma. A doctor distinguishes these quickly, often with a Wood's lamp.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical descriptions of shwitra note white, non-raised, non-itchy patches - consistent with the clinical picture above within an interpretive framework; evidence is limited and diagnosis belongs with a clinician.
Remember: well-defined milky-white patches, normal sensation, often around the face and hands - that is the typical picture. Itch, scaling or numbness point to a different diagnosis. See a dermatologist early rather than guessing.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune loss of pigment cells - not contagious, not infection, and not caused by milk, fish or food combinations.
Vitiligo moves from onset through active spread to stability - early phases repigment best, old white-haired patches least.
Ayurvedic care may accompany vitiligo treatment, but bakuchi is a real photosensitizer - burns and new patches are documented harms.
Stop activity, repigment patiently with phototherapy, graft stable patches, protect from sun - control, not a promised cure.
Onset cannot be reliably prevented, but burns, injury-triggered patches, delay and distress all can be.
Yoga and exercise serve stress, mood and fitness in vitiligo - protect patches from sun and friction, and let medicine do the treating.
