Prevent throat infections with handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick people, not sharing utensils, smoke-free air, and managing allergies and reflux.
Block the spread of viruses and strep:
Reduce irritation that invites and mimics infection:
General resistance: adequate sleep, regular meals, and routine vaccination (including flu) keep respiratory defences up. The diphtheria component of routine vaccination prevents that dangerous throat infection.
Remember: clean hands, no shared utensils, smoke-free air, and completed antibiotics for strep - that is throat-infection prevention.
Daily-regimen (dinacharya) practices like oil pulling and warm water are traditional hygiene habits; proven prevention rests on the measures above.

A throat infection is inflammation of the pharynx or tonsils, usually viral and self-limiting, though bacterial causes like strep need antibiotic treatment.
Most throat infections are treated with rest, fluids and pain relief for 3-7 days; strep throat is cured with a full antibiotic course, and abscess or epiglottitis need hospital care.
Warm salt-water gargles, honey (over age 1), warm fluids, rest and simple painkillers ease most sore throats; antibiotics from a doctor are needed for strep.
During a throat infection choose soft, warm, easy-to-swallow foods and plenty of fluids; avoid very spicy, sour, crunchy items and very hot drinks.
Ayurvedic measures like warm salt-water gargles, turmeric and soothing herbs can ease a viral sore throat, but suspected strep needs antibiotics to prevent heart and kidney complications.
Throat infections are grouped by site (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis) and by cause (viral, bacterial strep, fungal), each with different urgency.
