Most throat infections are treated with rest, fluids and pain relief for 3-7 days; strep throat is cured with a full antibiotic course, and abscess or epiglottitis need hospital care.
Step 1: Judge the likely type. Viral (cough, runny nose, hoarseness, mild fever) is managed at home. Strep-suggestive (high fever, severe pain, pus on tonsils, tender neck glands, no cough) deserves a doctor's visit - a throat swab or clinical assessment decides. Emergency signs (drooling, breathing trouble, muffled voice, one-sided swelling) go straight to hospital.
Step 2: Viral - supportive care. Rest, fluids, warm salt-water gargles, honey (over 1 year), paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever. It resolves in 3-7 days. Antibiotics do nothing for viruses and cause harm when misused.
Step 3: Strep - antibiotics, completed. Penicillin or amoxicillin (or an alternative for allergy) for the full prescribed course, usually 10 days. Pain and fever improve within 1-2 days of starting, but finishing the course is what prevents rheumatic fever and kidney complications. Add the same comfort measures as viral care.
Step 4: Complicated cases.
Step 5: Follow-up. See a doctor again if symptoms last beyond a week, worsen after improving, or if joint pain, rash, dark urine or swelling appears in the weeks after a sore throat.
Remember: viruses get comfort, strep gets a completed antibiotic course, and danger signs get emergency care.
Ayurvedic supportive care fits Step 2 comfortably. Steps 3 and 4 - antibiotics, drainage, emergency care - are modern medicine alone.

A throat infection is inflammation of the pharynx or tonsils, usually viral and self-limiting, though bacterial causes like strep need antibiotic treatment.
Prevent throat infections with handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick people, not sharing utensils, smoke-free air, and managing allergies and reflux.
Warm salt-water gargles, honey (over age 1), warm fluids, rest and simple painkillers ease most sore throats; antibiotics from a doctor are needed for strep.
During a throat infection choose soft, warm, easy-to-swallow foods and plenty of fluids; avoid very spicy, sour, crunchy items and very hot drinks.
Ayurvedic measures like warm salt-water gargles, turmeric and soothing herbs can ease a viral sore throat, but suspected strep needs antibiotics to prevent heart and kidney complications.
Throat infections are grouped by site (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis) and by cause (viral, bacterial strep, fungal), each with different urgency.
