A throat infection is inflammation of the pharynx or tonsils, usually viral and self-limiting, though bacterial causes like strep need antibiotic treatment.
A throat infection - commonly called a sore throat or pharyngitis, and tonsillitis when the tonsils are involved - is inflammation and infection of the back of the throat. It is one of the most common reasons people of all ages visit a doctor, especially children.
Most sore throats are viral (70-90% in adults, somewhat less in children) and come along with colds and flu: they heal on their own in 3-7 days and do not need antibiotics. The important bacterial cause is Group A Streptococcus ("strep throat"), which does need antibiotic treatment - not mainly to shorten the illness, but to prevent complications. Untreated strep can lead to rheumatic fever, which damages heart valves and remains a real problem in India, as well as kidney inflammation (post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis) and pus collections around the tonsil.
Typical symptoms: pain or scratchiness when swallowing, redness, swollen tonsils sometimes with white patches, tender neck glands, and fever. Viral illness usually adds a runny nose, cough, hoarseness or conjunctivitis; strep more often comes with high fever, severe pain, no cough, and white pus on the tonsils.
When to see a doctor: severe pain, fever above 101F lasting over 2-3 days, white patches on tonsils, drooling or inability to swallow, difficulty breathing, a muffled "hot potato" voice, one-sided swelling, a stiff neck, rash, or symptoms lasting beyond a week.
Remember: most sore throats heal themselves; antibiotics are for proven or strongly suspected strep, never routine.
Ayurveda describes throat disorders under kantha roga with balancing measures. This is an interpretive framework; bacterial complications like rheumatic fever are prevented by timely modern care, not by traditional remedies alone.

Most throat infections are treated with rest, fluids and pain relief for 3-7 days; strep throat is cured with a full antibiotic course, and abscess or epiglottitis need hospital care.
Prevent throat infections with handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick people, not sharing utensils, smoke-free air, and managing allergies and reflux.
Warm salt-water gargles, honey (over age 1), warm fluids, rest and simple painkillers ease most sore throats; antibiotics from a doctor are needed for strep.
During a throat infection choose soft, warm, easy-to-swallow foods and plenty of fluids; avoid very spicy, sour, crunchy items and very hot drinks.
Ayurvedic measures like warm salt-water gargles, turmeric and soothing herbs can ease a viral sore throat, but suspected strep needs antibiotics to prevent heart and kidney complications.
Throat infections are grouped by site (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis) and by cause (viral, bacterial strep, fungal), each with different urgency.
