The main dangers of urticaria are angioedema with throat swelling and anaphylaxis - both 112 emergencies; chronic hives themselves harm sleep, mood and quality of life more than the body.
Urticaria itself does not scar, does not damage organs, and does not turn into anything sinister. Its real complications come in three forms - one emergency, one slow-burden, one treatment-caused.
1. The emergencies:
2. The slow burden of chronic urticaria:
3. Treatment-related risks (the avoidable ones):
What is NOT a complication: chronic urticaria does not cause skin cancer, does not damage the liver or kidneys, and does not "spread internally" - the disease is mast cells in skin (and sometimes deeper swelling), full stop.
Remember: throat and breathing symptoms are 112 - that is the one life-risk. Everything else is about protecting sleep, mood and nutrition while daily antihistamines hold the line until the disease burns out.
Classical texts treat skin eruptions as quality-of-life afflictions - an accurate frame. The emergency layer and the steroid-harm layer are distinctly modern lessons; both matter more than any traditional comfort.

Urticaria (hives) happens when mast cells in the skin release histamine - triggered by foods, medicines, infections or physical factors, though chronic hives often have no findable cause.
Acute urticaria is cured by removing its trigger and a short antihistamine course; chronic urticaria is controlled (not cured) with daily antihistamines for months until the disease burns out.
Exercise is fine with most hives and stress-calming yoga genuinely helps chronic urticaria - but sweat and heat trigger some types, and never exercise through swelling or breathing symptoms.
Non-sedating antihistamines (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine) are the mainstay - taken daily for chronic hives; steroids are short-course rescue only, and omalizumab helps stubborn chronic cases.
Only ban foods with a proven personal reaction; blanket diet bans in chronic urticaria are useless and harmful - though a short low-histamine trial can help some, and alcohol often worsens hives.
Ayurveda treats urticaria as Sheetapitta with neem, haridra and diet rules; these may soothe itch, but antihistamines are the proven mainstay and throat swelling is never a herbal situation.
