Cancer correlates with Ayurvedic conditions like Arbuda and Granthi defined as deep seated fixed and large swellings affecting Mamsa and Rakta dhatus. The pathology involves the vitiation of Tridosha where Kapha generates mass and Vata drives abnormal growth. Malignant forms like Raktarbuda present with rapid growth and bleeding resembling sarcomas while Mamsarbuda appears as stone hard painless masses. Causes include the consumption of incompatible foods excessive meat and fatty substances which obstruct body channels. Management focuses on systemic purification through Panchakarma specifically Virechana and Vamana to eliminate toxins alongside surgical intervention for removal. Prognosis is generally poor for vascular tumors designated as Asadhya or incurable due to their deep roots and rapid progression.
Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. In Ayurveda, this condition correlates with Arbuda (Tumor) and Granthi (Knot/Nodule). These are classified as diseases of the Mamsa (Muscle/Flesh) and Rakta (Blood) tissues, involving a severe vitiation of the Tridosha (three bio-energies) and obstruction of body channels.
Ayurvedic Definition: An Arbuda is defined as a swelling that is round (Vritta), fixed or immobile (Sthira), large (Mahan), deep-seated, and slow-growing. It involves the vitiation of muscle tissue (Mamsa) and blood (Rakta). Unlike a standard abscess (Vidradhi), an Arbuda generally does not suppurate (form pus) easily. Granthi refers to a knotty, hard swelling or nodule, which can be a precursor or smaller form of a tumor.
Literal Meaning:
Arbuda: "a swelling," "tumor," or "mass."
Granthi: "a knot" or "joint," implying hardening of tissue.
Conceptual Interpretation: Ayurveda views tumors as a metabolic disorder where Kapha Dosha (mass/growth) and Vata Dosha (cell division/spread) become aggravated. They damage the Mamsa (flesh) and Rakta (blood), creating a consolidated mass that obstructs channels (Srotas).
Viruddha Ahara: Chemically or energetically incompatible foods (e.g., fish + milk) vitiate blood/tissues.
Meat and Fat: Excess consumption of meat from marshy/aquatic animals and fatty foods (Meda) blocks channels (Srotas) and vitiates tissues.
Kapha Aggravating Foods: Heavy, sweet, and oily foods → abnormal tissue growth.
Sedentary Habits: Day sleep, lack of exercise → accumulation of Meda and Kapha → tumor growth.
Trauma (Abhighata): Injury to flesh can trigger Mamsarbuda (flesh tumors).
Samprapti Ghataka (Components):
Dosha: Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha); Kapha provides mass, Vata drives irregular growth.
Dushya (Tissues): Mamsa, Rakta, Meda.
Agni (Digestion): Dhatvagni Mandya → Ama formation → abnormal tissue.
Process: Vitiated Doshas accumulate in muscle/blood vessels → compress channels → condensed, rounded swelling. Dominant Kapha → fixed (Sthira), large. Severe Pitta/Rakta → rapid growth, inflammation.
Small, hard knot/nodule under skin.
Localized swelling.
Mamsarbuda: Stone-hard (Pashanavat), painless, fixed, skin-colored.
Raktarbuda: Rapid, fleshy, vascular, bleeds easily (Mamsa-ankura).
General: Deep-seated, non-suppurating, slow but steady growth.
Ayurvedic (Pariksha):
Darshana: Size, shape, surface.
Sparshana: Hardness (Ashmavavat) and fixity (Sthira).
Prashna: Pain/diet inquiry.
Differential Diagnosis: Distinguished from Vidradhi → acute, painful, pus-forming. Arbuda → chronic, often painless, non-suppurating.
Light, digestible foods → prevent Ama.
Avoid: Viruddha Ahara, excessive meat (especially marshy/aquatic), dairy.
Kanchanara → glandular swellings/tumors (Granthi).
Guggulu: Triphala Guggulu, Kanchanara Guggulu → reduce masses.
Haridra → blood purifier, anti-inflammatory.
Triphala → detoxification.
Virechana → purgation for Arbuda/Granthi.
Vamana → emesis for Granthi/Kapha disorders.
Upanaha → warm herbal poultice to soften mass.
Raktamokshana → bloodletting.
Surgical/Parasurgical: Kshara (alkali) & Agni Karma (cauterization).
Curable: Benign (Granthi) or early-stage tumors.
Incurable (Asadhya): Raktarbuda → rapid, bleeds; Mamsarbuda → deep/fixed.
Arbuda → Malignant Tumor/Cancer.
Granthi → Benign Tumor/Cyst.
Raktarbuda → vascular malignancy/sarcoma.
Adhyasthi → bone tumors.
Chronic inflammation → modern cancer research aligns with Shopha / Pitta aggravation.

Q: What is the Ayurvedic term for a tumor?
A: The Ayurvedic terms are Arbuda (tumor/mass) and Granthi (knot/nodule).
Q: Is cancer curable in Ayurveda?
A: Ayurveda classifies tumors into curable and incurable types. Raktarbuda (blood tumors) and deep-seated Mamsarbuda (flesh tumors) are often described as Asadhya (incurable) or difficult to treat (Krichrasadhya). Early-stage conditions and benign growths are considered treatable.
Q: Which Panchakarma is used for tumors?
A: Virechana (therapeutic purgation) is explicitly listed as a treatment for Arbuda (Tumors). Vamana (emesis) is used for Granthi (Cysts).
Q: What causes tumors according to Ayurveda?
A: Excessive consumption of meat (especially from marshy animals), fats, and incompatible foods (Viruddha Ahara) leads to the vitiation of muscle and blood tissue, causing tumors. Physical trauma can also be a cause.
Q: Can herbal poultices help?
A: Yes. Upanaha Sweda (medicinal poultice) is indicated for treating tumors to help soften or reduce the swelling.
