Tetanus causes painful muscle stiffness and spasms, usually starting with lockjaw and trouble swallowing, and it is always a medical emergency.
Tetanus symptoms usually begin 3 to 21 days after a contaminated wound, though they can appear sooner or later. The illness is caused by a toxin from the bacterium Clostridium tetani that attacks the nerves controlling muscles.
Early symptoms:
Progressing symptoms:
In newborns (neonatal tetanus): a baby who fed normally for the first two days stops being able to suckle, becomes stiff, and has spasms. This follows unclean cutting or dressing of the umbilical cord and is a dire emergency.
Tetanus is always a medical emergency. If lockjaw, muscle stiffness or spasms follow a wound - especially a deep, dirty or rust-contaminated one - go to a hospital immediately or call 112. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen, and do not rely on home treatment.
Remember: lockjaw and muscle spasms after a wound mean hospital now, not home remedies.
Ayurvedic texts describe wind-related spasmodic disorders, but tetanus is a toxin-driven emergency that only modern hospital care can treat. Traditional remedies have no role in the acute illness.

There is no effective Ayurvedic cure for tetanus; it is a life-threatening emergency needing immediate hospital care, and traditional measures can only support later recovery.
Tetanus is almost completely preventable with vaccination, proper wound cleaning, and clean delivery and cord care for newborns.
No home remedy can treat tetanus - it is a medical emergency requiring hospital care; home care only means proper wound cleaning and vaccination before illness strikes.
In acute tetanus, diet is managed by the hospital - often by feeding tube; during recovery, a soft, protein-rich, easy-to-swallow diet rebuilds strength.
Tetanus treatment uses hospital-only medicines - tetanus immunoglobulin, antibiotics, and spasm-controlling drugs - with vaccination as the key preventive product.
Tetanus complications include breathing failure, pneumonia, fractures from spasms, and heart rhythm problems; without treatment it is often fatal.
