Tetanus complications include breathing failure, pneumonia, fractures from spasms, and heart rhythm problems; without treatment it is often fatal.
Breathing failure is the most dangerous complication. Spasms of the throat (larynx) and breathing muscles can suddenly block the airway. This is why tetanus is treated in an ICU with airway support ready. Prolonged spasms and immobility also lead to pneumonia, the most common secondary infection.
Muscle and bone injury. Violent spasms are strong enough to tear muscles and even break bones, including spinal compression fractures. Tongue biting during spasms is common.
Heart and blood pressure instability. The toxin disturbs the autonomic nervous system, causing swings in blood pressure, fast or irregular heart rhythms, and sweating episodes - a major cause of death in severe cases.
Blood clots and bedsores. Weeks of bed rest raise the risk of deep-vein clots, lung embolism and pressure sores, which ICU care works to prevent.
Feeding problems and weight loss. Lockjaw and swallowing spasms prevent normal eating for weeks; without careful nutritional support, patients lose significant weight and muscle.
Long-term effects. Recovery takes weeks to months. Residual stiffness, weakness and psychological distress (the spasms occur with full consciousness, which is traumatic) may need physiotherapy and counseling. Survivors get NO natural immunity - they must be vaccinated after recovery.
Fatality risk. Without treatment, tetanus kills a large proportion of patients; with modern intensive care, most survive. Neonatal tetanus remains one of the deadliest forms. This is why prevention through vaccination matters so much.
Remember: tetanus complications are severe but survivable with ICU care - and the whole disease is preventable with a simple vaccine.
Ayurveda can support rehabilitation after the acute illness. The complications listed above are ICU-level problems that only modern medicine can manage.

There is no effective Ayurvedic cure for tetanus; it is a life-threatening emergency needing immediate hospital care, and traditional measures can only support later recovery.
Tetanus is almost completely preventable with vaccination, proper wound cleaning, and clean delivery and cord care for newborns.
No home remedy can treat tetanus - it is a medical emergency requiring hospital care; home care only means proper wound cleaning and vaccination before illness strikes.
Tetanus causes painful muscle stiffness and spasms, usually starting with lockjaw and trouble swallowing, and it is always a medical emergency.
In acute tetanus, diet is managed by the hospital - often by feeding tube; during recovery, a soft, protein-rich, easy-to-swallow diet rebuilds strength.
Tetanus treatment uses hospital-only medicines - tetanus immunoglobulin, antibiotics, and spasm-controlling drugs - with vaccination as the key preventive product.
