Ayurvedic view of pratishyaya as an adjunct, with safety notes.
Ayurveda describes sinus problems mainly under pratishyaya (cold and nasal congestion) and dushta pratishyaya or peenasa (chronic sinus conditions). In the traditional view, aggravated Kapha, together with Vata or Pitta, blocks the channels of the head and nose. This is an interpretive framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic treatments of sinusitis is limited, so they should be an adjunct to proper medical care and never a substitute when infection or complications are possible.
Traditional approach
What research says Saline nasal irrigation has reasonable evidence for easing symptoms. Evidence for most herbal formulations is limited and varies in quality.
Safety points
When to see a doctor Symptoms lasting over 10 days, high fever, severe facial pain, or swelling around the eyes need medical care.
Remember Steam, saline rinsing and warm food bring comfort. Persistent or severe symptoms need a doctor.
