Snoring Causes and Symptoms

Snoring

Snoring is the hoarse or harsh sound that occurs when air flows past relaxed tissues in the throat, causing the tissues to vibrate as you breathe. In Ayurveda, this phenomenon is not described as a standalone disease but is a prominent symptom found in conditions affecting the Kantha (throat) and Nasa (nose), specifically Galashundika (elongated uvula) and Sthaulya (Obesity). The sound is technically termed Ghurghuraka, often associated with the obstruction of the respiratory passage (Pranavaha Srotas) by Kapha Dosha and Medas (fat).

1. Definition

• Modern Definition: A noise produced during sleep due to the vibration of the soft palate and uvula when the airway is partially obstructed.
• Ayurvedic Definition: A sound described as Ghurghuraka produced when Vata (air) struggles to move through a passage obstructed by Kapha (mucus) or Mamsa/Medas (muscle/fat). It is often a symptom of Kantharoga (diseases of the throat) where the uvula (Galashundika) or tonsils (Tundikeri) obstruct the throat [Madhava Nidana, 56].

2. Etymology & Conceptual Meaning

• Literal Meaning: Ghurghuraka is an onomatopoeic term resembling the sound of purring, wheezing, or gurgling.
• Conceptual Interpretation: Ayurveda views snoring as a state of Srotorodha (channel obstruction). The Prana Vayu (vital breath) is obstructed in the Kantha (throat) region. This obstruction is usually caused by the heavy, stable qualities of Kapha or the laxity of tissues (Dhatu Saithilya) seen in obesity [Charaka Samhita, Su21; Madhava Nidana, 56].

3. Causes (Nidana)

Snoring arises from factors that aggravate Kapha and Medas (fat), leading to tissue laxity and obstruction.

• Dietary Causes:
  • Excessive intake of Madhura (sweet), Snigdha (oily), and Guru (heavy) foods.
  • Consumption of dairy products like Dadhi (curd/yogurt) and Masha (black gram) which increase Kapha and block channels [Charaka Samhita, Su27].
  • Drinking cold water or eating ice cream which aggravates Kapha in the throat.
• Lifestyle Causes:
  • Divaswapna: Sleeping during the day, which is a primary cause of Kapha aggravation and obesity [Charaka Samhita, Su21].
  • Avyayama: Lack of physical exercise leading to the accumulation of fat in the neck region.
• Physical Factors:
  • Galashundika: Elongation or swelling of the uvula caused by Kapha and blood (Rakta), which creates a physical obstruction to breathing [Madhava Nidana, 56].
  • Sthaulya (Obesity): Accumulation of fat in the throat narrows the passage [Charaka Samhita, Su21].

4. Journey of the Disease (Pathogenesis/Samprapti)

• Samprapti Ghataka (Components):
  • Dosha: Kapha (Primary obstruction), Vata (Prana and Udana Vayu - Movement).
  • Dushya (Tissues): Mamsa (Muscle of the throat/palate), Medas (Fat).
  • Srotas (Channels): Pranavaha Srotas (Respiratory tract).
  • Adhisthana (Site): Kantha (Throat), Talu (Palate), Nasa (Nose).
• Pathogenesis:
  1. Due to Kapha-aggravating diet and sedentary lifestyle, Kapha and Medas (fat) accumulate in the body.
  2. This accumulation localizes in the neck and throat region (Kantha Pradesha).
  3. The accumulation causes swelling or relaxation of the (like the or ).

5. Symptoms (Lakshana)

• Early Symptoms:
  • Heaviness in the neck or throat.
  • Mukha-shosha: Dryness of the mouth upon waking (due to mouth breathing).
  • Tandra: Drowsiness or lack of energy during the day [Charaka Samhita, Su21].
• Advanced Symptoms:
  • Loud Ghurghuraka (vibrating sound) during sleep.
  • Krichra-ucchvasa: Difficulty in breathing or interrupted breathing during sleep.
  • Kasa: Cough, often caused by the irritation of the elongated uvula touching the [Madhava Nidana, 56].

6. Different Types or Classification (Bheda)

While not classified into specific "types of snoring," it can be categorized by the underlying cause:

1. Kaphaja: Due to mucus and congestion in the nose/throat.
2. Medoja: Due to obesity and fatty accumulation in the neck.
3. Vataja: Associated with dryness and structural irregularities.
4. Galashundika-janya: Specifically caused by the elongation of the uvula [Madhava Nidana, 56].

7. Diagnosis

• Ayurvedic Diagnosis (Roga Pariksha):
  • Darshana (Observation): Inspecting the throat for Galashundika (swollen uvula) or Tundikeri (tonsillitis). Observing the patient for signs of Sthaulya (obesity).
  • Prashna (Questioning): Asking about sleep quality, day sleep habits (Divaswapna), and dietary intake of heavy/dairy foods.
• Differential Diagnosis:
  • Distinguish between simple snoring (due to position/fatigue) and that caused by pathological obstruction like polyps (Nasarsas) or tumors [Madhava Nidana, 58].

8. Disease Management

Management focuses on Kapha-Medo-Hara (reducing Kapha and Fat) and clearing the respiratory passages.

Diet (Ahara)

• Beneficial: Warm, light, and dry foods.
  • Honey (Madhu): Excellent for scraping Kapha from the throat [Sutrasthana, 27].
  • Barley (Yava): Helps in reducing fat.
  • Spices: Ginger (Shunthi), Black Pepper (Maricha), and Long Pepper (Pippali) to stimulate Agni and clear mucus.
• Avoid: Curd (Dadhi), heavy sweets, cold water, and dinner late at night.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

• Vyayama (Exercise): Essential to reduce overall body fat and throat congestion.
• Sleep Position: Sleeping on the side rather than the back to prevent the tongue from falling back.
• Avoid Divaswapna: Strictly avoid sleeping during the day as it increases Kapha and fat [Charaka Samhita, Su21].

Medicines

• Khadiradi Gutika: A specific tablet kept in the mouth to treat throat diseases (Kantharoga) and strengthen the gums and oral cavity [AFI, 12:5].
• Vyoshadi Vati: Used for rhinitis (Pratishyaya) and respiratory disorders; helps clear the upper airways [Chakradatta, 60].
• Trikatu Churna: A powder of Ginger, Pepper, and Long Pepper to reduce Kapha and fat.
• Kanchanara Guggulu: Often used if there are glandular swellings (like tonsils) causing obstruction.

Panchakarma

• Nasya (Nasal Administration): The most critical therapy for head and neck disorders (Urdhwajatrugata Roga). Administering medicated oils like Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila clears the nasal passage and strengthens the structures of the throat [AFI, 8:1; Panchakarma Handbook].
• Kavala/Gandusha (Gargling): Gargling with warm water, salt, and turmeric, or medicated oils like Arimedadi Taila helps reduce swelling in the throat and uvula [AFI, 8:2].
• Lekhana (Scraping): In severe cases of Galashundika (elongated uvula), surgical intervention (scraping or excision) is described in Sushruta Samhita and Chakradatta [Chakradatta, 56].

9. Prognosis

• Sadhya (Curable): Snoring due to temporary nasal congestion or mild weight gain is easily curable with lifestyle changes and Nasya.
• Krichra (Difficult): Snoring associated with severe obesity or structural deformities may require long-term management or surgery.

10. Modern Correlations

• Sleep Apnea: Severe Ghurghuraka with interruption of breath correlates with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
• Uvulitis: Correlates with Galashundika.
• Obesity-Hypoventilation Syndrome: Correlates with the respiratory difficulties described in Sthaulya (Obesity) in Charaka Samhita.

  12. FAQ Section

Q: Can putting oil in the nose help with snoring?

A: Yes. In Ayurveda, this is called Nasya. Using Anu Taila or just warm sesame oil lubricates the nasal passages, reduces internal swelling, and clears the path for air, which can reduce snoring [AFI, 8:1].

Q: Does weight gain cause snoring according to Ayurveda?

A: Yes. Ayurveda explicitly states that in Sthaulya (obesity), the channels are obstructed by Medas (fat), causing difficulty in breathing and potentially leading to sounds during sleep [Charaka Samhita, Su21].

Q: What is the best gargle for snoring caused by throat swelling?

A: Gargling (Kavala) with warm water, turmeric, and rock salt is effective. For stronger action, Arimedadi Taila or a decoction of Triphala and Khadira (Catechu) is recommended to reduce swelling of the uvula and throat [Chakradatta, 56].

Q: Is sleeping during the day bad for snoring?

A: Yes. Ayurveda considers Divaswapna (day sleep) as a major cause of increasing Kapha and fat in the body, which directly worsens throat congestion and snoring [Charaka Samhita, Su21].
