Healthy eating in pregnancy with pre-eclampsia.
Diet cannot cure pre-eclampsia, and no food replaces blood pressure monitoring and medical care. Sensible eating supports overall health in pregnancy.
General advice
Salt
Do not eat very salty food, but do not cut salt completely. Restricting salt has not been shown to prevent pre-eclampsia. Follow your doctor's advice if you have already been told to limit salt.
Limit or avoid
Swelling
Mild ankle swelling is common in pregnancy. Do not restrict water to reduce it. Sudden swelling of the face or hands should be checked.
If admitted or on bed rest
Ask the hospital team about a suitable diet and foods that are easy to eat.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Traditional advice favours fresh, light, easily digested food in pregnancy. This overlaps with the points above, but evidence is limited. Avoid herbal products unless your doctor agrees.
When to get help
Ask your doctor or dietitian if you have diabetes, kidney disease or very high blood pressure.
Remember
A balanced diet helps, but regular checks and medical treatment are what protect you and your baby.
