Pre eclampsia correlates with the Ayurvedic concepts of Garbhini Shopha and Garbha Upadrava characterized by hypertension and edema during pregnancy. It arises from the aggravation of Vata and Kapha doshas often triggered by excessive salt intake and the suppression of natural urges known as Udavarta. Pathogenesis involves the obstruction of nutrient channels or Rasavaha srotas leading to fluid accumulation and metabolic disturbances. Management requires extreme caution prohibiting strong purification procedures like Vamana and Virechana. Instead the Ayurvedic Formulary of India recommends stabilizing formulations such as Phala Ghrita and Dadhika Ghrita to balance Vata and protect the fetus. Dietary restrictions on salt and the consumption of cooling nutritive foods like milk and ghee are essential to prevent progression to convulsions or Akshepa.
Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys. Pre-eclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women whose blood pressure had been normal. In Ayurveda, this condition correlates with Garbhini Shopha (swelling/edema in a pregnant woman) which, if untreated, can progress to Garbhini Akshepa (convulsions/Eclampsia) caused by the aggravation of Vata and complications like Udavarta (upward movement of physiological winds).
While not classified into types of pre-eclampsia, related conditions include:
The management of pregnant women must be "cautious, like carrying a full vessel of oil without spilling it". Strong purification (Panchakarma) is generally contraindicated.

Q: Can Ayurvedic detox (Panchakarma) be done for high blood pressure during pregnancy?
A: No. Major detox procedures like vomiting (Vamana) or purgation (Virechana) are strictly forbidden (Avamya/Avirechya) for pregnant women as they can harm the fetus. However, specific gentle enemas (Basti) may be used by an expert in late pregnancy if there is severe constipation or obstruction.
Q: Is salt bad for pregnant women according to Ayurveda?
A: Yes. Charaka Samhita states that excessive use of salt (Lavana) by a pregnant woman can lead to an offspring with early greying of hair and wrinkles, and contributes to water retention.
Q: What is the best Ayurvedic tonic for pregnancy complications?
A: Phala Ghrita is widely recommended in classical texts for Garbhini Roga (pregnancy diseases) and to prevent miscarriage. It promotes the health of both mother and child.
Q: What are the danger signs in pregnancy mentioned in Ayurveda?
A: Danger signs include sudden bleeding, severe abdominal pain (Shula), cessation of fetal movement, fever, and severe swelling. Udavarta (upward movement of wind causing constipation and pain) is considered particularly dangerous.
