Motion sickness complications: dehydration, persistent rocking, drowsiness risks and conditions that look similar.
Motion sickness is usually harmless and passes once the movement stops. But in some situations it can cause problems.
Dehydration and electrolyte loss
Repeated vomiting can cause dry mouth, little urine, weakness and dizziness. Children, older adults and pregnant women are at higher risk. Oral rehydration solution helps. Seek care if drinking is not possible.
Persistent symptoms
Safety risks
Effects on daily life
Fear of travel, avoiding trips or missing work or school. Anticipatory anxiety can make it worse.
Hyperemesis in pregnancy
Severe or continuous vomiting in pregnancy is not simple motion sickness and needs a doctor.
Conditions that can be mistaken for motion sickness
Inner-ear disease, migraine, low blood sugar, carbon monoxide exposure and serious brain or heart problems can mimic it.
Emergency (112 or 102)
Severe vertigo with weakness, slurred speech, double vision, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or a severe sudden headache.
Reducing the risk
Use the simple prevention steps, keep fluids up and see a doctor if symptoms are strong, persistent or follow no motion.
Remember
Most motion sickness is mild and passes once the movement stops. Plan ahead, stay hydrated and see a doctor if symptoms are severe or last more than a day.
