Stages of motion sickness: early warning, developing symptoms, vomiting and recovery, and when to act.
Motion sickness usually builds in a clear order. Acting at the early stages can often stop it before vomiting.
Stage 1: early warning (first minutes)
Yawning, restlessness, a vague uneasy feeling, mild headache and loss of interest in talk or food. Many people miss this stage.
Stage 2: developing symptoms
Cold sweat, pale skin, increased saliva, dizziness and mild nausea. This is the best time to act: look at the horizon, get fresh air, stop reading and breathe slowly.
Stage 3: full symptoms
Strong nausea, stomach discomfort, headache, sweating and weakness. Vomiting often follows. It becomes hard to think or speak.
Stage 4: peak and vomiting
Vomiting may bring brief relief, but nausea returns if the motion continues. Dehydration can start if vomiting repeats.
Stage 5: recovery
Once the movement stops, symptoms usually fade in 30 minutes to a few hours. Rest, sips of water and fresh air help. Tiredness may linger.
Adaptation
With repeated exposure, many people get used to the motion within 2 to 3 days at sea or after repeated trips. Symptoms often ease.
If recovery does not happen
Persistent dizziness, repeated vomiting or a rocking feeling lasting more than a day should be checked by a doctor.
Ayurvedic view
Traditional texts describe the build-up of Vata and Pitta symptoms in steps. This is not a clinical staging.
Key point
Treat at the early stages, before vomiting begins.
Remember
Most motion sickness is mild and passes once the movement stops. Plan ahead, stay hydrated and see a doctor if symptoms are severe or last more than a day.
