Ayurvedic view of insomnia (anidra): routine and calming practices as support, with herb cautions.
In Ayurveda, sleeplessness is called anidra or nidranasha. Sleep (nidra) is regarded as one of the three pillars of life, along with food and balanced living. Insomnia is usually linked with aggravated vata, sometimes with pitta. This is an interpretive framework and not a proven explanation.
How Ayurveda looks at it
What practitioners may discuss
Herbs such as ashwagandha, brahmi, jatamansi and shankhpushpi are traditionally used for calm and sleep. Warm milk with spices is a common household practice.
What the evidence says
Some small studies suggest that ashwagandha may modestly improve sleep, but studies are limited and vary in quality. Evidence for other herbs is weak. CBT-I has stronger evidence.
Important cautions
Key point
Ayurvedic routines can support better sleep, alongside proper evaluation of any cause and CBT-I.
Before your appointment
Keep a sleep diary for 1 to 2 weeks, noting bedtime, wake time, night awakenings, naps, caffeine and alcohol. List all medicines, herbs and sleeping aids you take. Mention snoring, breathing pauses, leg discomfort, pain, low mood, anxiety and daytime sleepiness while driving. Ask about CBT-I, tests, medicine options and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or Tele-MANAS at 14416.
