Fatty liver can often improve in early stages. A stepwise plan from assessment to follow-up.
There is no single pill that cures fatty liver, but it can often be improved or reversed in its early stages. Treatment mainly means changing lifestyle and managing related conditions.
Step 1: Get assessed
See a doctor for liver blood tests, ultrasound and, if needed, a FibroScan or fibrosis score. This shows whether there is inflammation or scarring.
Step 2: Lose weight steadily
Losing 7 to 10 percent of body weight reduces liver fat and inflammation, and more may help with fibrosis. Aim for gradual loss of about 0.5 to 1 kg a week.
Step 3: Eat for your liver
Choose vegetables, whole grains, pulses and healthy fats, and cut sugar, sugary drinks, refined flour and fried food.
Step 4: Move daily
At least 150 minutes of brisk activity a week, plus strength training twice weekly if possible.
Step 5: Stop alcohol
Or follow your doctor's advice.
Step 6: Treat related conditions
Control diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure. Some medicines for these also help the liver.
Step 7: Medicines or procedures if needed
Selected people may be offered vitamin E, newer MASH medicines, weight-loss medicines or bariatric surgery. These are specialist decisions.
Step 8: Follow up
Repeat blood tests, ultrasound or FibroScan as advised. People with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis need regular monitoring, including screening for liver cancer.
What not to do
Avoid detox products, unproven herbs and crash diets.
Ayurvedic diet and routine advice can support the lifestyle plan as an adjunct. Tell your doctor about anything you take.
Urgent signs
Vomiting blood, black stools, confusion, severe abdominal swelling or jaundice need emergency care (112 or 102).
