How burns heal: inflammation, repair, scar maturation - the normal course and the problems to watch for.
Burns do not have "stages" like a disease - they have depth degrees (covered in the Types piece) and, once treated, healing stages. Here is the healing journey, because knowing what normal looks like prevents panic and catches problems early.
Pain, redness, swelling, blister formation over the first 24-48 hours. What matters now: correct first aid (cool running water 20 minutes), protecting blisters, and judging whether the burn belongs at home or in a hospital. Swelling peaks around day 2-3 - a finger burn with a tight ring is a same-day problem.
New burn skin is fragile: pink, dry, itchy, sun-sensitive for a year or more. Moisturize it, protect it from sun (it burns and pigments easily), and expect itch - moisturizers and antihistamines help. Scars remodel for 12-18 months: pressure garments and silicone sheets, when prescribed, flatten them.
Classical wound texts staged healing as vrana's journey - shodhana (cleaning), then ropana (healing), then cosmetic restoration (vruna-ropana and vaikrutapaha). Their sequence matches the modern one: clean and cool first, heal second, tend the scar last. Patience was always part of the prescription.
Inflame, repair, mature: a minor burn's journey is one to three weeks plus a year of scar care; know the normal stages so the abnormal - infection, contracture, deepening - gets caught fast.
