Ayurveda and burns: Sushruta's depth grading, classical healing formulations, and where modern first aid leads.
Classical Ayurveda has a real burns chapter - Sushruta's Dagdha-vidhi (Sutra Sthana 12) classifies burns by depth and matches care to grade. That heritage deserves honesty in both directions: what is genuinely useful, and where classical and modern guidance part ways.
After correct modern first aid, for small superficial burns, classical topical formulations have a reasonable place:
Some classical passages advise WARM applications on fresh superficial scorching and caution against cold water. Modern burn medicine's answer is the opposite and is not negotiable: cool running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible after the injury - it limits depth, pain and damage, and it is what every emergency service teaches. On a fresh burn, follow the modern protocol first; classical topical care enters only afterwards, on minor burns, in the healing phase. No tradition overrides the golden first half-hour.
Classical burn medicine was sophisticated about depth and staged healing; use its cooling, healing applications on minor burns AFTER modern first aid - and let the modern 20-minute cooling rule, not any text, own the first half-hour.
