Yoga for body ache: restorative poses while ill, daily maintenance for tension, gradual capacity building - with the timing rules and honest evidence.
Yoga and body ache have a two-way relationship: the wrong practice causes aches, the right practice relieves and prevents them. The difference is mostly gentleness and timing.
During fever, active viral illness, or the first day or two of heavy soreness, the practice is rest plus the softest movement:
Skip strong flows, long holds, hot yoga and inversions while ill - exertion during fever is a classical Apathya and modern advice alike.
Regular, gradual practice - sun salutations at an easy pace, standing poses, walking - builds the muscle resilience that makes ordinary life stop causing soreness. The classical cap on exertion (to half one's capacity) applies here too: the ache-causing yoga class is the one that outruns your current capacity.
Trial evidence supports yoga for chronic low-back pain and shows modest benefit in fibromyalgia-type widespread pain - the strongest data among the aches. For viral or exertional aches the benefit is comfort and circulation, not speed of cure. And yoga is not the answer to the red flags: dark urine after exertion, fever with rash or stiff neck, weakness, or persistent unexplained pain need a doctor before a mat.
Abhyanga, warm baths, gentle movement and regulated breathing were the classical prescription for Angamarda - body ache - for two millennia. Modern yoga-as-recovery is the same medicine by another name: warmth, gentleness, breath and rhythm, added to rest.
