Ayurveda on body ache (Angamarda): warm oil massage, Dashamula, Mahanarayana Taila, rest and light food - a recovery tradition with clear modern limits.
Body ache has an ancient Ayurvedic pedigree - the Charaka Samhita opens its chapter of great herb-groups with the Angamardaprashamana Mahakashaya, ten herbs chosen specifically to relieve it. The classical approach is a comfort-and-recovery tradition, and it works best kept in that lane.
Angamarda arises from vitiated Vata circulating through the body's channels, from Ama (undigested metabolic residue) blocking them, or from plain exhaustion of the tissues through overwork, suppressed sleep, or suppressed hunger (Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutra Sthana 4). Treatment divides neatly by cause - a distinction modern care would recognize:
Rest, warm and draft-free sleep, warm baths after oil massage, light warm food (rice gruel, moong soup, ginger-cumin seasoning), warm water to drink - and avoidance of cold drafts, cold baths, day sleep and night-waking. As recovery regimens go, it has aged remarkably well.
Ayurvedic care shines for recovery from exertion, viral-illness convalescence and everyday Vata-type aching. Evidence is traditional rather than trial-based, and the limits are the modern red flags: fever with rash or stiff neck, dark urine after exertion, weakness, persistent pain beyond two-three weeks, or new widespread pain after 50 all need medical diagnosis first. Comfort measures - classical or modern - never substitute for finding the cause.
