Small frequent feeds, smoke-free calm air, upright positioning, no cough syrups - and any breathing pause or infant patient goes to hospital.
Home care for whooping cough is real and valuable - for the older child or adult with mild disease, it is most of the treatment. For infants, home is the wrong place; the section below marks that line clearly.
The core home measures:
Honey and warm drinks soothe the throat in children over one year and adults - never honey under 12 months (infant botulism risk).
What home care must NOT include: OTC cough syrups (ineffective in pertussis, unsafe in small children), antibiotics without prescription, exposure to cigarette or chulha smoke, and 'waiting out' any danger sign.
The line where home care ends - memorize it: any breathing pause, blue or grey colour, limpness after a fit, poor feeding or signs of dehydration, any suspected case under six months of age, fever developing mid-course (suggests pneumonia), or fits so frequent the child cannot feed or sleep. These mean hospital - 112/108 for breathing pauses.
Contagion duty at home: keep the patient away from infants, pregnant women and unvaccinated children; the patient is contagious until 5 days of appropriate antibiotics (or 3 weeks from fit onset without them).
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): traditional soothing measures fit inside this frame within an interpretive framework of limited evidence - comfort for mild cases only.
Remember: small frequent feeds, smoke-free calm air, upright positioning, honey only over one year, no cough syrups - and any breathing pause, blue spell or infant patient goes to hospital.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection - weeks of coughing fits with a whoop - and infants are the lives at stake.
Classic in unvaccinated children, atypical and dangerous in infants, hidden and contagious in adults - age and danger signs decide severity.
Cold stage (most contagious), fits stage (weeks - infants belong in hospital), long recovery - fever or apnoea at any point changes everything.
Cold, then coughing fits with whoop and vomiting for weeks - in infants, a breathing pause or blue spell is the emergency signal.
Infants and danger signs to hospital; older mild cases at home with antibiotics and supportive care; the cough resolves on its own clock.
Infant apnoea and pneumonia are the killers; rib fractures and burst vessels are the mechanical costs; vaccination prevents the whole list.
