ORS is the cornerstone product; antiemetics are targeted prescription tools - and for children, fluids over pills.
The honest headline about vomiting medicines: the most important product is not a pill at all - it is ORS. Antiemetic drugs have their place, but only with the right drug, for the right patient, ideally on prescription.
ORS - the cornerstone. Oral rehydration solution replaces the water, salt and potassium vomiting removes. Low-osmolarity WHO-formula sachets are cheap, everywhere, and life-saving in children. This is the product every home should stock.
Antiemetics (vomit-stopping drugs):
For children: antiemetics are mostly NOT recommended without a doctor; the treatment is ORS and time. Never give leftover adult antiemetics to a child.
self-prescribed antibiotics for 'stomach infection' (most are viral), painkillers on an empty stomach during a vomiting illness, and stopping essential medicines because of vomiting without medical advice.
Probiotics have modest evidence for shortening infectious diarrhoea-vomiting illnesses and are safe adjuncts.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical antiemetic preparations exist within an interpretive framework of limited evidence; ginger preparations are the exception with genuine supporting evidence. None replaces ORS or prescription antiemetics when those are needed.
Remember: ORS first, always. Antiemetics are targeted tools - ondansetron selectively, domperidone briefly, pregnancy nausea via the doctor, motion sickness via antihistamines - and for children, fluids over pills.
