Fluids first, khichdi-and-curd-rice recovery, normal food within days - no forced fasting, no forced feeding.
During and after vomiting, food strategy is simple: fluids first, light food when ready, normal diet within days - plus knowing which situations rewrite the rules.
During active vomiting: nothing by mouth except small sips of ORS or clear fluids. Do not force food or milk. Sucking ice chips or sipping nimbu-pani (with a pinch of salt and sugar) can help some people.
As vomiting settles (first 6-12 hours): clear fluids in increasing amounts - ORS, rice water (kanji), coconut water, thin dal water, weak tea. Small portions, often.
Recovery day (next 24-48 hours): soft, bland, low-fat food - khichdi, curd-rice, banana, toast, boiled potato, idli. Curd is traditionally well-tolerated and reasonable here. Add dal and cooked vegetables next; return to normal food as appetite allows.
Foods to delay: milk in quantity, fried and oily food, heavy spice, very sweet dishes, alcohol, and large caffeine doses - all can re-trigger nausea or loosen stools.
Special situations:
The myth to drop: complete fasting 'to rest the stomach' beyond the active phase is unnecessary and delays recovery - early light re-feeding heals the gut faster.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical recovery dietetics - gruels, light khichdi-type preparations, gradual return - matches this guidance within an interpretive framework of limited evidence. The fluid-first, early-light-refeeding sequence above is the operative part.
Remember: ORS sips during vomiting, clear fluids next, khichdi-and-curd-rice recovery, normal food within a couple of days. No forced fasting, no forced feeding - and pregnancy or infants change the rules toward medical advice sooner.

Short self-settling vomiting needs no tests; persistent, bloody or severe vomiting earns blood tests, imaging or endoscopy.
