How to lower the risk of ear infections with vaccines, breastfeeding and smoke-free homes.
You cannot prevent every ear infection, but several steps lower the risk, especially in children.
Steps that help
For adults
Manage allergies and sinus problems, stop smoking, and swallow or yawn during flights to equalise pressure. Avoid flying with a heavy cold when possible.
Ayurvedic view
Traditional advice includes avoiding cold wind on the head, staying warm in cold weather and eating warm, light food during colds. These overlap with sensible modern advice. Claims that a herb or oil prevents ear infection are not proven.
See a doctor if your child has repeated ear infections, as an ENT review for adenoids, fluid or hearing is worthwhile.
When to get help
See a doctor or ENT clinic if ear pain, discharge or hearing change does not settle in a couple of days, if infections keep coming back, or if you are unsure about any medicine or drop. Early assessment protects hearing and helps avoid unnecessary treatment.
Remember
Vaccines, breastfeeding, smoke-free homes and upright feeding are the best-supported steps.
