Home care for osteoporosis: fall-proofing, weight-bearing activity, sunlight and posture.
Home care for osteoporosis focuses on preventing falls and strengthening bones. It supports medical treatment, not replaces it.
Fall-proof your home
Daily habits
Traditional household practices
Sesame, ragi and milk are commonly eaten for bone health. Warm oil massage is traditional. Do not massage over a recent fracture or painful spine.
Be careful with
Forceful spinal twisting, bending forward from the waist and heavy lifting can cause spinal fractures in weak bones.
See a doctor if you fall, feel sudden back pain or have trouble standing.
When to get help
Speak with your doctor or an orthopaedic, endocrinology or rheumatology clinic if you have had a fracture from a minor fall, lose height, or develop a stooped back. Checking bone health early, with a DEXA scan where advised, lets you start the right plan before a break happens.
Remember
A safe home and daily weight-bearing activity are among the best protections against fractures.
