Latex allergy diet: latex-fruit syndrome, foods that may cross-react and why to avoid only trigger foods.
Diet does not treat latex allergy. It matters only when you also react to foods that cross-react with latex.
Latex-fruit syndrome
About 3 in 10 people with latex allergy also react to certain plant foods because they contain proteins similar to latex.
Foods most often linked
Not everyone reacts to all of them, and many people with latex allergy eat these foods safely.
What to do
Severe reactions
If a food reaction causes swelling, breathing trouble or dizziness, treat it as an emergency and call 112.
Healthy eating
A balanced diet supports skin health. No food or supplement is proven to reduce latex allergy.
Supplements
Do not take herbal or vitamin supplements as a treatment for allergy without advice.
Ayurvedic dietary advice
Ayurveda suggests light, fresh, warm food and avoiding foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Evidence for any Ayurvedic diet in latex allergy is limited, so use it only as general advice.
Key point
Avoid only the foods that cause you symptoms, and seek a test if you react to fruit.
Before your appointment
Note which items or procedures caused symptoms, how soon symptoms began, and how long they lasted. List any reactions to bananas, avocado, kiwi, chestnut or other foods. Mention your job, past surgeries, catheters, asthma, eczema and other allergies. List medicines, supplements and herbal products, and bring any allergy card or adrenaline injector. Ask about allergy testing, latex-free products and an emergency action plan. Tell your doctor and dentist about the allergy before any procedure. Call 112 for swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing.
