Hiccups diet: eat slowly, smaller meals, limit fizzy drinks, alcohol and spicy food, and manage reflux.
Food habits are a common trigger for short bouts of hiccups, so small changes can help prevent them.
Eating habits that help
Foods and drinks that may trigger hiccups
If you also have reflux
What may help in the moment
Small sips of water, and plain warm foods such as khichdi or dal soup.
Ayurvedic dietary view
Warm, light, freshly cooked food and regular mealtimes are traditionally advised to calm vata. This is a traditional approach with limited trial evidence.
For babies
Feed in a calm, upright position and burp after feeds. Do not give honey to infants under 12 months.
Key point
Slow, moderate meals prevent most food-related hiccups.
Before your appointment
Note when the hiccups began, how long they last, what seems to trigger or ease them, and whether they disturb sleep or eating. List all medicines, alcohol use, recent surgery and any reflux, chest pain, weakness or breathing trouble. Bring past reports. Ask about tests, treatment options and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
