Ayurvedic view of hiccups (hikka): a supportive adjunct only, with cautions and limited evidence.
In Ayurveda, hiccups are called hikka. Classical texts link them to aggravated vata, often with kapha, affecting the movement of breath and the chest and upper abdomen. This is a traditional framework and not a modern medical explanation.
How Ayurveda looks at it
What practitioners may discuss
What the evidence says
There are very few good trials showing that Ayurvedic herbs or formulations stop hiccups. Some traditional remedies are widely used, but their effect in people is not proven.
Important cautions
Key point
Use Ayurvedic advice as support for habits and comfort, and get hiccups that persist checked.
Before your appointment
Note when the hiccups began, how long they last, what seems to trigger or ease them, and whether they disturb sleep or eating. List all medicines, alcohol use, recent surgery and any reflux, chest pain, weakness or breathing trouble. Bring past reports. Ask about tests, treatment options and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
