Herpes diet: balanced nutrition, soft cool foods during sores, and what is known about lysine and arginine.
No diet has been shown to cure herpes or prevent every recurrence. Good nutrition supports the immune system and healing.
General principles
The lysine and arginine idea
Some people believe that lysine-rich foods help and arginine-rich foods such as chocolate, nuts and seeds trigger cold sores. Research on this is limited and mixed, so treat it as an individual observation, not a rule. If a food clearly triggers your episodes, you may reduce it.
When the mouth is sore
Ayurvedic dietary view
A pitta-pacifying diet with cooling, light foods is traditionally suggested, and reducing very spicy, fried, sour and fermented food. This is a traditional approach with limited trial evidence.
Be careful with
Key point
Food supports recovery but does not replace antiviral treatment.
Before your appointment
Note when the first symptoms began, where the sores or rash are, and any fever or pain. List past episodes, triggers, partners who should know, and any pregnancy. Bring your medicines and past reports, including HIV or STI tests. Ask about antiviral options, how to protect others and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
