Feeding a croupy child is fluids first - small frequent sips, warm soups, khichdi, honey over one year - with appetite allowed to dip for a few days. Cold treats are fine, force-feeding is not, and nothing goes by mouth while breathing is laboured. Practical food guidance for the loud nights and the recovery week.

Croup is a viral infection of the voice box and windpipe, and it belongs almost entirely to toddlers - their airways are narrow enough that a little swelling makes a lot of noise. Which viruses cause it, why it strikes at night in autumn and winter, and why the same virus gives an older child just a cold.
The classics described a cough sounding "like a broken bronze vessel" two thousand years ago - the Kasa and Svarabheda chapters fit croup's brassy bark and hoarse cry remarkably well. Ayurveda's real role here: calm, warmth, honey over age one and convalescent care - never a substitute when a small airway struggles.
The vast majority of croup ends with no complication at all. The ones that exist - breathing obstruction watched by red flags, rare bacterial superinfection, dehydration, and recurrence that children outgrow - plus why croup does not cause asthma and leaves no mark on the lungs.
Croup belongs to the six-month-to-three-year crowd. A barking baby under 6 months or a child over 7 needs the diagnosis confirmed; a pregnant mother catches only a harmless cold from the same virus; and an adult or elderly person with true stridor is facing something else entirely - an emergency, not croup.
The best home remedy for croup is a calm child held upright - crying tightens the airway. Then the traditions that genuinely comfort: cool night air, warm fluids, honey over age one, a smoke-free room - and no steam, which risks scalds without benefit. What helps, what is harmless, what to skip, and where home care ends.
Treating croup is a ladder: calm holding and cool air at home for the mild bark, a same-day single steroid dose to shorten the illness, urgent care when stridor appears at rest, and 112 for struggle, drooling or blue. Each rung explained - and the treatments that do not belong on it.
