Heart attack, heart failure, lethal rhythms and sudden death - the complications that medicines, stents and vigilance prevent.
CAD's complications are the reasons it is treated so seriously: heart attack, heart failure, dangerous rhythms, and sudden cardiac death. Knowing them is not pessimism - it is the map of what treatment exists to prevent.
The acute complication: plaque rupture, clot, blocked artery, dying heart muscle. Survivable - increasingly so with fast angioplasty - but every attack leaves some scar, and the amount depends on how fast the artery was reopened. This is why the 102/108 call and the golden hours dominate every chest-pain message.
Weakened pumping after heart muscle damage (from attacks) or years of overwork (uncontrolled BP): breathlessness on effort then at rest, swollen feet, fatigue, sleeping propped up. Managed with a specific set of modern medicines that genuinely extend life - but far better prevented by protecting the muscle in the first place.
Scarred or starved heart muscle misfires electrically: palpitations, racing or irregular heartbeat, blackouts. Some rhythms are nuisances; ventricular ones are lethal within minutes without a shock. High-risk patients receive implanted defibrillators (ICDs) - and everyone with CAD benefits from rhythm checks at reviews.
The most feared complication - often the first symptom of CAD in apparently healthy people, and the reason silent-risk screening (BP, cholesterol, sugar, family history) is a public-health obsession. Survival outside hospital is low; prevention of the underlying disease is the real answer.
Stable angina turning crescendo or rest angina is itself a complication-in-motion - treat the pattern change as an emergency, not an inconvenience.
CAD's complications - heart attack, heart failure, lethal rhythms, sudden death - are exactly what medicines, stents, rehab and vigilance exist to prevent; pattern changes and post-stent pain are always emergencies.
