Cataract clouds the eye's natural lens, fading vision slowly and painlessly - and it is India's commonest treatable blindness.
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens - the clear structure behind the pupil that focuses light. As the lens turns cloudy, vision fades gradually, painlessly, and usually in both eyes at different speeds. It is the commonest cause of treatable blindness in the world, and India carries one of the heaviest burdens.
The lens is living tissue made of protein and water, kept clear by precise architecture. With age (and sometimes diabetes, injury, steroids or sunlight), those proteins clump and the lens opacifies. Light scatters instead of focusing: vision becomes misty, glare-prone, faded. No pain, no redness - just a slow fogging.
Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in India - and it is reversible blindness. A 15-20 minute surgery (phacoemulsification, or the equally effective small-incision technique used across India's eye camps) replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one, and sight returns. Millions of free or low-cost surgeries happen every year through government programs, eye camps and institutions like Aravind. Nobody in India needs to stay blind from cataract.
No medicine, drop, diet or exercise can dissolve or reverse a cataract - not in any system of medicine. Glasses help early on; surgery is the cure when vision interferes with life. This series will say this plainly, because the biggest harm in cataract care is delay sold as treatment.
Ayurveda's eye science (Shalakya Tantra) graded this exact disease two thousand years ago: timira (early clouding) progressing to kacha and finally linganasha (mature cataract) - and the classics themselves declared the mature stage a surgical condition, describing the couching procedure in detail. The honesty is ancient: medicine for early stages, surgery when mature.
Cataract is the lens clouding with age - painless, gradual, universal after 60 - and it is India's commonest cause of blindness precisely because the cure (a 20-minute surgery) gets delayed.
