Does bronchitis have stages? The 3-phase course of acute bronchitis and GOLD staging of chronic bronchitis (COPD) explained.
An honest note first: acute bronchitis has no formal staging system - it is a short, self-limiting illness with a recognizable course rather than stages. Chronic bronchitis, as part of COPD, is staged by lung function. Here is the useful version of both.
Worsening instead of improving, high fever, or breathlessness breaks this pattern and needs a doctor - that is pneumonia until proved otherwise.
When chronic bronchitis is part of COPD, doctors stage severity by spirometry (FEV1 - how much air you can blast out in one second):
Symptom burden and flare-up history refine the grouping (A to E categories) and guide inhaler choices. The point of staging: it tells your doctor how hard to treat and you how urgently to protect what lung function remains - quitting smoke helps at every stage, most at the earliest.
The classics staged coughs by depth of damage rather than numbers: simple Kasa (curable), then Kshataja (injury-pattern), then Kshayaja (wasting - graded difficult to incurable). The instinct translates: catch airway disease while it is still just a cough.
Acute bronchitis runs a 3-phase course ending in a lingering-but-healing cough; chronic bronchitis is staged as COPD by spirometry - and every stage improves faster the day the smoke stops.
