Home remedies for bladder infection that actually help: hydration, not holding urine, warmth for cramping - plus the honest truth about cranberry and when home care is not enough.
Home measures genuinely help a bladder infection - as support and comfort, and for preventing the next one. What they cannot do is cure an established bacterial infection on their own; that usually needs an antibiotic.
Cranberry juice and capsules are the most famous UTI home remedy. Studies suggest cranberry products may help some women prevent recurrent infections, but the evidence is mixed, and cranberry has not been shown to treat an active infection. See a doctor the same day if you have fever, back or flank pain, vomiting, blood in urine, or symptoms lasting more than two days - and immediately for any urinary symptoms in pregnancy, in men, in children, or if you have diabetes or a catheter. A simple urine test settles the diagnosis, and most infections clear quickly with the right antibiotic.
Classical regimen for urinary complaints included coriander-infused water, coconut water, barley water and cucumber - cooling, diuretic drinks that fit comfortably beside modern hydration advice. The core classical rule matches the modern one exactly: never suppress the urge to urinate.
