Epilepsy, sleep and gut problems, anxiety, wandering and drowning risks, bullying - what travels with autism, and the preventable harms every family can guard against.
Autism itself is not an illness with complications in the usual sense - but living autistic without support carries real, predictable risks, and certain medical conditions travel alongside autism more often than chance. Knowing them lets families prevent, spot and treat early rather than be surprised.
The commonest bad outcome is not medical at all - it is the unsupported child becoming the isolated, anxious adult. Every evidence-backed protection is boring and powerful: early therapy, communication access, a school that understands, family acceptance, and community awareness. These do not change who the child is; they change the child's odds of a good life.
Classical texts offer no framework for autism's co-occurring conditions as a group. Where their principles genuinely align with risk reduction is gentleness and stability: calm environments, predictable routine, no frightening or harsh handling of children (Charaka Samhita, Sharira Sthana 8.64). Those are protective factors any era would endorse - the rest belongs to modern paediatrics and vigilant parenting.
Will my autistic child develop epilepsy? Most do not - but the risk is higher than average, so learn the signs (staring spells, unusual jerks, unexplained drops in skills) and report them promptly. Epilepsy is very treatable.
How do I keep a child who wanders safe? Layer the defences: door alarms and high locks at home, an ID bracelet with your number, swimming lessons early, neighbours and school informed, and a recent photo on your phone. Practise "stop" and "come" relentlessly, in play.
Why is my cheerful child suddenly anxious and withdrawn? New anxiety in an autistic child has a cause - bullying, a school change, sensory overload, or illness (gut pain is a classic hidden culprit). Investigate the cause; do not attribute it to "just autism."
What single safety step matters most? Swimming lessons, if wandering or water attraction is in the picture - drowning is the largest single injury risk, and water competence plus secure barriers changes it.
