Allergies have stages in two senses: what happens inside a single reaction (minutes), and how allergic disease unfolds across a life (years).
Allergies have stages in two senses: what happens inside a single reaction (minutes), and how allergic disease unfolds across a life (years). Both matter.
Classical texts did not stage a single attack minute-by-minute, but they staged the disease's deepening with characteristic precision. Pratishyaya, Charaka warns, is trivial when fresh (Nave) and dangerous when neglected - progressing from simple catarrh to Dusta Pratishyaya (chronic, complicated catarrh) and seeding serious downstream disease if suppressed or mismanaged. The skin texts similarly read the doshic shift of lesions - from dry Vataja scaling to inflamed Pittaja oozing to chronic Kaphaja thickening - as a worsening trajectory.
The shared insight across both systems: allergic disease punished neglect. Early, boring, consistent management beats heroic late intervention. That principle needs no translation.
Can a mild reaction turn severe without warning? Yes - reactions can escalate over minutes, and past mildness does not guarantee future mildness. Worsening swelling or any breathing involvement means emergency care.
What is a biphasic reaction? A second wave of anaphylaxis hours after the first resolves. It is why hospitals observe severe reactions even after they improve.
Do children outgrow the stages? Many outgrow eczema and milk or egg allergy. Hay fever and asthma more often persist, though severity can soften with age.
Is each exposure worse than the last? Not predictably. Severity varies with dose, health, and cofactors like exercise or alcohol - unpredictability is itself the risk.
