Acidity rarely arrives as a full-blown problem. It builds in stages - an occasional burn after a heavy dinner, then a weekly visitor, then a daily companion. Classical Ayurveda tracks this progression, and knowing which stage you are in tells you how serious the response needs to be.
The burn or sour belch shows up only after clear provocations - a spicy meal, a late night, too much tea. Digestion otherwise works fine. At this stage, removing triggers and a few home remedies usually settle things completely. This is functional acidity: no damage, just a system briefly pushed past its limit.
Symptoms return several times a month, then weekly. The classical reading: Agni (digestive fire) is now chronically disturbed, and Vidagdha Ajirna - sour, incomplete digestion - is becoming a habit rather than an event. Appetite, energy, and sleep begin to dip. Diet correction alone often still works here, but it needs to be real and sustained, not a two-day fix.
Daily or near-daily symptoms. Classical texts describe the sour, sharp Pitta now injuring the stomach lining itself - the territory where Amlapitta shades into Parinama Shula (pain arising during digestion, a duodenal-ulcer-like picture) and Annadrava Shula (constant pain, a gastric-ulcer-like picture). Complications - ulcers, bleeding, anaemia - become real risks. This stage needs both medical evaluation (endoscopy, H. pylori testing) and disciplined traditional care. Home remedies alone are no longer enough.
Modern equivalents move similarly: heartburn, then GERD, then erosive oesophagitis or peptic ulcer disease - a progression confirmed by endoscopy rather than symptom-reading.
The classical texts treat the Amlapitta-to-ulcer path as one continuum of deepening Pitta damage to the Annavaha Srotas (food channel). Their urgency about early Pathya (right diet) comes from exactly this: catch it at the functional stage, and the structural stage never arrives.
Frequent heartburn can progress to GERD, oesophageal erosion, and - over years - complications like strictures or Barrett's oesophagus, per NHS heartburn guidance. Symptoms twice a week or more, or any alarm feature (swallowing difficulty, bleeding, weight loss), justify medical investigation rather than more self-treatment.
How do I know my acidity is chronic? If you need antacids most days, or symptoms disturb your sleep and meals regularly, treat it as chronic and get assessed.
Can stage 1 really be reversed? Yes - at the trigger-linked stage, removing the causes usually ends the problem entirely.
Does chronic acidity always lead to ulcers? Not always, but the risk climbs with duration. That is why persistent symptoms deserve an endoscopy rather than years of self-medication.
Acidity gives fair warning as it deepens: occasional, then recurring, then chronic. The earlier you act - with diet, routine, and traditional care - the simpler the fix. Past the recurring stage, add a doctor's evaluation to make sure the lining underneath is still intact.
