Normal home food, daily movement, real sleep and a monthly eye on the trend - two kilos caught early never becomes twenty.
Preventing weight gain is far easier than reversing it - the same habits that treat obesity prevent it, installed before the kilos arrive.
Build the defaults early. Regular meal times, home-cooked food most days, vegetables and dal on the plate by habit, water as the default drink, sweets and fried food as occasions rather than routines. These are far easier to maintain than to retrofit.
Keep moving by design. A daily floor of activity - brisk walking, cycling, active commuting, stairs - matters more than sporadic gym bursts. 150 minutes a week of moderate activity is the standard floor; building sitting breaks into desk work protects against the modern default.
Sleep 7-8 hours. Chronic short sleep raises hunger hormones and weight; protecting sleep is obesity prevention, not luxury.
Watch the trend, not the day. Weigh monthly (or notice belt notches); 2-3 kg of creep is trivially correctable with a few weeks of attention, while 15 kg is a project. Early correction is the entire secret of prevention.
Manage the high-risk transitions: after marriage (routine changes), after pregnancy (retained weight compounds across pregnancies), at job changes to desk work, at menopause, and when starting weight-promoting medicines (steroids, some psychiatric drugs) - these are the moments weight creeps, and a little foresight at each prevents it.
Family environment. Children learn portions, snacking and screen habits at home; a household with normal food and active routines is prevention for the next generation.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical daily-routine (dinacharya) guidance - regular meals, activity, proper sleep, seasonal moderation - is prevention in its own language, within an interpretive framework of limited evidence. The measurable habits above carry the effect.
Remember: normal home food, daily movement, real sleep, and a monthly eye on the trend - with special vigilance at marriage, pregnancy, desk-job and menopause transitions. Two kilos caught early never becomes twenty.
