Causes and risk factors of sciatica, from slipped disc to stenosis.
Sciatica is pain that travels along the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. It starts in the lower back, runs through the buttock and down the back of the leg, sometimes to the foot. Sciatica is a symptom of irritation or pressure on the nerve roots, not a disease by itself.

Factors that raise the risk
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda describes sciatic-type pain as gridhrasi, caused mainly by aggravated Vata, sometimes with Kapha, in the lower back and leg. This is a traditional framework and not a medical explanation.
When to see a doctor See a doctor if pain lasts more than a few weeks, is severe, or follows an injury. Urgent care is needed for leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin.
Remember Most sciatica improves within weeks. Knowing the cause helps choose the right treatment.
