How ringworm develops from early patch to healing.
Ringworm does not have official stages, but the infection usually passes through recognisable phases if it is not treated. Understanding them helps you spot it early and know when treatment is working.
Incubation (1 to 2 weeks) After contact with the fungus, there may be no signs for several days to two weeks. The fungus is multiplying in the top layer of the skin.
Early stage A small, red, itchy and slightly scaly spot appears. This is the best time for treatment, which usually clears it in two to four weeks.
Active spreading stage The patch enlarges in a ring, with a raised, scaly or sometimes blistered edge, while the centre starts to clear. New patches may appear from scratching or sharing towels and clothes.
Established or chronic stage Without treatment, patches can last months, merge and become thick or darkened. Scalp or nail infection can persist for a long time.
Complicated stage Scratching can lead to bacterial infection with pus, swelling and pain. Overuse of steroid creams can make the rash large and unusual. In weak immunity, the fungus can invade deeper tissue, which is rare.
Healing stage Itching settles first, then the scaling fades. Darker or lighter marks may remain for weeks to months after the fungus is gone.
Preventing spread Treat all active lesions, wash clothes and towels in hot water, and finish the full course even when the skin looks clear, since stopping early often allows relapse.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda sees skin conditions as passing from aggravated doshas to tissue involvement. This is a conceptual comparison only.
Remember Early treatment is quick and simple. See a doctor if there is no improvement after two weeks.
