Step-by-step treatment of ringworm and how long it takes.
Ringworm is treatable and usually clears completely with the right antifungal medicine and good hygiene. Most body, groin and foot infections respond within two to four weeks. Scalp and nail infections take longer.
Step 1: Confirm it is ringworm Look for a ring-shaped, scaly, itchy patch. If unsure, a doctor can confirm with a skin scraping, hair sample or nail clipping that is examined under a microscope or cultured.
Step 2: Start an antifungal Apply a cream such as clotrimazole, terbinafine or luliconazole once or twice daily to the rash and a margin around it. Continue for one to two weeks after the rash clears.
Step 3: Use oral treatment when needed Scalp, beard, nail, widespread or stubborn infections usually need tablets prescribed by a doctor, for several weeks or months, with attention to liver safety.
Step 4: Prevent spread and recurrence Wash clothes and towels in hot water, do not share personal items, treat infected pets and keep skin dry.
Is there a cure? Yes, the infection can be cleared. It can return if you are exposed again, if treatment is stopped early or if moisture and sweat remain unchecked.
Common mistakes Using steroid creams, stopping as soon as itching fades, using one cream for all rashes, and relying on lemon, vinegar or other irritants.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurvedic external applications and diet advice may support skin care but have limited evidence, so they should be an adjunct to antifungal treatment.
When to see a doctor Seek care if there is no improvement in two weeks, if the rash is widespread or recurs often, or if there is pus, fever or severe pain. Children with scalp patches and people with diabetes should be reviewed early.
Remember Be consistent: apply the cream daily, keep skin dry and finish the full course.
