How psychosis is treated with medicines and support.
Psychosis is treatable. Most people improve, and many recover well, especially with early treatment.
Step 1: get assessed urgently
A psychiatrist assesses symptoms, safety and possible medical causes. Blood tests, a physical check and sometimes brain scans or an EEG may be done to rule out other causes.
Step 2: ensure safety
If the person is at risk of harming themselves or others, hospital admission may be needed. Call 112 in an emergency.
Step 3: medicines
Step 4: psychological and social support
Step 5: relapse prevention
Treating a cause
If psychosis is due to a medical condition or substance, treating that cause is essential.
Recovery
Some people recover fully after one episode. Others need long-term care and support. Both outcomes are common, and many people live full lives.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Traditional approaches may offer calm and routine as an adjunct, but they do not replace psychiatric treatment.
Remember
Early treatment, steady medicines and support lead to the best recovery.
