Ayurvedic view of impetigo: supportive skin care only, with cautions. Antibiotics from a doctor treat the infection.
Ayurveda has no condition that matches impetigo exactly. Weeping, crusting skin eruptions are traditionally discussed under visarpa, pama or visphota, linked to pitta and kapha with impure rakta (blood). This is an interpretive framework and not a proven explanation.
How Ayurveda looks at it
What practitioners may discuss
Neem, turmeric and similar herbs are traditionally used for skin conditions. Some laboratory studies show activity against bacteria, but this does not show that they treat impetigo in people.
What the evidence says
Impetigo is a bacterial infection that responds well to prescribed antibiotics. Good trials showing that Ayurvedic pastes, oils or herbs cure impetigo are lacking.
Important cautions
Key point
See a doctor early. Ayurveda may support general skin care and hygiene, but not as the main treatment.
Before your appointment
Note when the sores began, where they started, whether they ooze or crust, and whether anyone at home or school has similar sores. List any fever, itching, eczema, scabies, diabetes, allergies and medicines tried so far. Take a photo of the rash. Ask about the antibiotic, when it is safe to return to school and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
