How an ear infection usually moves from a cold to fluid, infection and recovery, and when to get the ear checked.
Ear infections are not formally staged the way some diseases are, but they follow a typical course.
A common middle ear sequence
How long it lasts
Swimmer's ear typically starts with itching, moves to pain on touching the ear, and then to swelling and discharge if it is not treated.
A classical note. Ayurveda describes ear disease as moving from Vata imbalance with pain to discharge and tissue damage if neglected. This sequence is a teaching framework. In practice, the useful rule is the modern one: do not wait if symptoms are not improving after 2 to 3 days.
Parents often ask when to worry. The practical markers are time and direction: if things are getting better by day 2 or 3, the usual course is on track. If pain, fever or discharge is increasing, or new symptoms appear, the child should be re-examined without waiting longer.
