The comfort-care playbook for a cold's 7-10 days, what to refuse, the red flags for a doctor, and the lingering cough explained.
Treating a common cold is comfort care plus patience: the immune system clears the virus in 7-10 days, and your job is to feel human meanwhile. Here is the whole playbook, honestly ordered.
Gradual onset, nose-led symptoms, sneezing, mild or no fever, functional days: a cold. Sudden high fever with severe body ache: think flu. Sneezing for weeks without fever: think allergy. The right label chooses the right response.
A dry cough outliving the cold by 2-3 weeks is common and harmless - honey, warm fluids, time. A cough with breathlessness, chest pain or colored sputum with fever is a different matter - see a doctor.
Rest, fluids, paracetamol, steam, saline, gargle and honey carry you through a cold's 7-10 days; refuse antibiotics, and let high persistent fever, breathing trouble, ear pain or the 10-day mark send you to a doctor.
