Classical atisara care - rice gruels, rest, staged re-feeding - supports mild illness; dehydration belongs to ORS and hospitals.
Violent purging diseases are ancient, and the classical texts faced them without ORS - yet their instinct for fluid-and-rest management reads surprisingly modern. Honest framing first: cholera gravis is a modern emergency; classical care belongs to the mild end and to recovery.
The classics described profuse diarrheal disease as atisara, and a violent simultaneous purging-and-vomiting disorder as visuchi - the picture of severe cholera-like illness. These were graded seriously: the texts themselves marked the severe, debilitated forms as dangerous and hard to save - an ancient acknowledgment that fluid loss kills.
In a mild, stable case under medical observation - or in the recovery week - classical supportive food-therapy (rice gruels, thin buttermilk, staged light diet) fits naturally and helps. During any sign of the dehydration ladder, modern fluids own the case entirely.
Classical atisara/visuchi care - rice-water gruels, rest, staged re-feeding - is honest support for mild illness and recovery, while cholera with dehydration belongs wholly to ORS and hospitals.
