Ayurvedic treatment for calcium deficiency: Asthi Kshaya, brimhana nourishment, Pravala and Mukta shukti - with modern care.
Ayurveda has its own complete account of bone depletion - Asthi Kshaya - and a classical mineral pharmacy built around calcium-rich preparations. Here is what the tradition actually says, with its limits.
The symptom verse could be a modern checklist. Charaka (Sutra Sthana 28, verse 16): "Asthi-shula, danta-bheda, danta-pata, kesha-nakha-loma-pata..." - bone pain, breaking teeth, loss of teeth, falling or brittle hair and nails. Sushruta (Sutra Sthana 15, verse 13) adds pricking bone pain (asthi-toda) and bodily dryness; Ashtanga Hridaya (Sutra Sthana 11, verse 18) adds weakness and looseness of the body. Teeth, nails and hair are exactly the tissues Ayurveda assigns to asthi dhatu and its byproducts - a 2,000-year-old symptom list that maps directly onto the modern one.
The causes follow the vata pattern: dry, light, cold food; excess of pungent, bitter and astringent tastes; overexertion; fasting beyond capacity; grief; aging. And there is a structural insight modern medicine echoes: Ashtanga Hridaya (Sutra Sthana 11, verses 26-28) makes vata the resident of bone (ashraya-ashrayi bhava) with an inverse rule - rising vata depletes bone, and calming vata rebuilds it. The classical frame is nutritional-depletive: the tissue is starved, so the treatment is nourishment - brimhana.
Ayurveda prepared mineral calcium centuries before supplements existed:
These are Bhasma-processed minerals: they require correct preparation, correct dosing, and quality control. They are prescription items from a qualified Ayurvedic physician - not DIY powders, and never a substitute for correcting vitamin D and diet.
Modern medicine measures intake, absorption and bone density; Ayurveda reads the depletion pattern and prescribes nourishment with mineral support. They agree on the essentials: feed the tissue, fix the gut, respect age, keep vata (wear and depletion) down. Modern testing leads on diagnosis and monitoring; the classical regimen adds diet, routine and classical formulations under a physician.
Asthi Kshaya is Ayurveda's bone-depletion diagnosis; its answer is nourishment therapy plus classical calcium preparations like Pravala and Mukta shukti - physician-prescribed, alongside (never instead of) correcting diet and vitamin D.
